The goals of the Music Theory Society include fostering the development of all aspects of the discipline of music theory, including research and teaching. It provides forums for the presentation of research, including themed workshops and other aspects of professional development.

In addition, the Society sponsors and runs the Music Theory Forum every year.  This regional conference, the longest running student organized conference, attracts papers and presentations from all over the country.
